When I try to update AVG it says it can't connect to the internet.
Does anyone know why? It worked fine until a couple weeks ago. |

If a user is going to take these risks, then it really doesn't matter how up-to-date they keep their AV software - they are going to get burned by malware eventually and then switch AVs because that one 'let something slip by'. First people buy into the whole 'AV will protect me' idea, then they fall for the 'autoupdate scenario', and now the AVs must compete to be the fastest def updaters and deal with the whole bandwidth consumption problem of their servers when panic strikes. </rant> |

Anyway, the following, submitted by "donutbandit" in "alt.windows-me" worked for me; Open the url.ini folder in the AVG folder and replace what's there with this: [SERVER_NAME] 1=free.grisoft.cz 2=ftp.grisoft.com 3=www.grisoft.com [SERVER_URL] 1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe 2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/ 3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/ Actual URL=3 --- Incoming/Outgoing; Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.624 / Virus Database: 401 - Release Date: 15/03/2004 |

If they would respond to e-mails about the issue or take a pro-active step in communicating with users it might be a different issue. In this most competitive of all worlds customer service really matters even if you are providing a free 'sample'. But apart from that, having been an AVG user for quite a few years now I find that Avast is simply far better both in it's design and facilities. <<<Why stampede to the defs when all you really need to do is not execute (sometimes passworded and zipped?) executable files that arrive via e-mail, unrequested? These people are not guardian angels you know, they are in business, they sell a product to us. If someone else provides a better service then they will lose. polly |

I just updated while reading these threads, the update started faster than
my download of some of these threads. Did same thing last time I was on. I have had problem connecting to server a couple of times, but not recently. I tried avast on my son's machine. I like the AVG interface better but have no other way to judge. I use mailwasher and Pegasus mail so virus risk is low anyway. Since the product is free reference to money is irrelevant. The vulnerability was announced in plenty of time for a fix to have been in place before Blaster was even unleashed. Blaster defs did nothing to fix the real problem with a broken internet facing service. This also caused people to stampede to get new defs for variants that they shouldn't have even been worried about. [snip] P.S. I was not ranting at you, nor was I defending AVG's lack of support for the stampeding masses. It just irks me that users are screaming for faster implementation of definitions so that they can more quickly have their AV jump up and save their bacon. |
