The reason is that Grisoft have become negligent and sloppy, this is not the
first time that their servers have failed to provide updates and, as always,
they communicate nothing. Elsewhere in this group you can find instructions
on editing the file (url.ini) that AVG uses to search for updates although
it doesn't seem to work for everyone.

I have had a number of clients whose security was threatened by inability to
update and so began the process of switching them to Avast (www.avast.com)
which seems to be leagues beyond avg in terms of efficiency and customer
support. Other here may not share that opinion but I would recommend going
to avast and junking AVG.

If they lose enough users they might start to value us!
