Check to see if you have any of these files on your system:

ansmtp.dll
msdm.bat
msdm.exe
syscpy.exe

These are common spam relay programs that don't get pick up by some spyware
or anti-virus programs. Some spam relays will start automatically and if
you're not connected to the internet, it may try to force a connection.

If you have any of the above files, check out this link for cleanup info.

Also run msconfig or some other program to see if some software you may
have installed wants to run an automatic update program.

You do have a program running,
the one that's trying to connect. ;-)

If you have Norton AV installed it may be that. It has been doing
strange things since 7th.

The previous posts should show you that it's not possible to diagnose your
situation from what you've provided.

How do you know that something is trying to log into the Internet?

Are you running a firewall, and if so, what's in the logs?

What's installed, including the OS, and what shows up on the task list?
You might be surprised at what's running even if you've just rebooted and
started no programs.

What's in the start-up list?

What do you get when you do a full scan with your anti-virus software
after doing a fresh update?

You're too far away<G>! Besides, I dug for two hours last night, and then
had to dig for another two today, to cleanup what the plow left. My back's
had enough, for today. (I don't bother with the garage, as it's full of
my brother in-laws stuff. No room for any vehicles<g>.)
