Default silly question of the day

I had to remove my Norton from my system and am currently without AV.

What's the best AV for a P4 1.8 with XP Pro SP1, DSL modem through
Netgear router? Downloadable would be preferred.

I stopped using Norton long ago. it just kept crapping out. I switched to
NOD32 and I have been pleased with NOD32. It has full trialware at
www.nod32.com

In addition to the other advice you received, check out PC-Cillin from Trend
Micro. It's become a very good product and works well with XP Pro.

NOD32, excellent software. The best in my opinion.

You know, everyone has their favorites and this is not blasting you
DOS at all because I am the same way. I **** canned Norton Bloatware
in favor of a more slim running, less intruding and less resource
eating AV application.

However, I do not know if I made the best choice because..... well I
would like to see a site that takes all the AV applications and runs
them all through the ringer and posts their findings giving an
impartial writeup on the pros & cons of each one individually and then
stacks them all up against each other in ascending order as to the one
with the best protection for the buck listed on top and filtering down
to the bottom where the ones that seem over priced and over bloated
for what they offer or offer not much at all are listed.

I would also like to see the same thing on Firewalls because I don't
know if I made the best choice there either.

I am happy with the AV and Firewall choices I have made but would
still like to see a knowledgable comparison of all the apps on the
market so I can make a more informative choice. Now, some have
suggested that I simply go to each one's site and read what each one
offers and make my decisions based on that... Well, does anyone really
think any app dealer is going to post their own cons and shortfalls?

An impartial comparison would be nice.
