With a help of a friend I was able to disinfect my computer from a
worm virus and install antivirus software like mcafee. Before, I tried to install mcafee and the virus would the exe file. I tried a whole bunch of antivirus programs but all had the same effect, the .exe file would be lost. My friend helped me by reading some of the posting and discovered that the viruses look into the registry and find out the latest program that is installed and delete the .exe file. Therefore best to install the antivirus software on C:\myTrap directory this way the virus cant know by looking for it in the registry. Next a small program from mcafee can detect some of these virus, and you don't have to register the software http://mu.resnet.ucla.edu/stinger.asp the stringer helped to identify the virus and was able to clean it as well. Install the mcafee antivirus on a different directory other that what they specify, and NOT in the Program Files directory. DON'T reboot the system, you will infect the mcafee! Through windows explorer go to C:\myTrap\vsMain.exe and double click to run it. There will be a message of some sort, agree with it and let the mcafee scan your harddrives. Hope that helps people out there! |

Farah,
Glad to see you got things figured out. You certainly learned a great deal and probably taught folks like Bart Bailey who said, "Or if she's as naive as indicated, and would have trouble even finding an online scan, could take it back to where she bought it and pester them to show her how to make it work right. That way the burden of determining the source of corruption would fall on some folks that *should* know what to do <g> -Bart" It seems often times people with absoltuly nothing to contribute will find a way to contribute 'less than nothing'. So, my contribution is simply one of thanks in sharing your findings with the rest of us. I've built computers for years and dealt with Virus Scanners of many types. It never fails to amaze me how much you can either learn, or be reminded, when it comes to Virus activity. Thanks again Farah. Great work! Yes, you have demonstrated that quite convincingly. >So, my contribution is simply one of >thanks in sharing your findings with the rest of us. Thanks again Farah. Great work! Of course there was the possibility that she only had one computer, an infected one, and no experience navigating online scans etc. therefore my suggestion to utilize the talents of the sales staff at her local computer outlet, after all she did offer the caveat that she was a newbie. I'm encouraged that Farah had the willingness and spirit to tackle the issue and persevere until a successful outcome was reached. Empirical knowledge is often the best kind. So congrats to Farah, as for you Tim, you need to practice your implied sarcasm a bit, to hone that cutting edge so skillfully exhibited in this newsgroup, by oh so many regulars, good luck. ;-) Bart |

There is absolutely NO room for "Empirical knowledge" when dealing with individuals who have straightforwardly asked simple and honest help concerning any effort in helping to remove his/her problem. I continue to laud Farah on her achievement and, once again, contribute her efforts in NO PART to Bart's attempt to belittle her in his first response to her problem. His later explanation would have been better served. Continued luck to you, Farah, and to others who will gleam true knowledge through enriched resources. Users who contribute the help they possess rather than opt for degradation, in an attempt to display a form of wisdom, is truly appreciated. Learn to contribute my friend rather than spend time compromising the fault
in a past practice. You failed this individual. Don't make matters worse by trying to understate the obvious. The only time I seemed to have wasted was in battling with you. But, I don't regret calling you to the matt on your initial mistake in responding to such person in the way you did. I hear your explanation. Enough said about that. Let's move on to bigger and better things; like Virus attacks and how to help one another, huh? I feel confident you'll do better the next time Bart.
