what card has the most value in regards to price/performance?
i have a athlon xp 2800+ with 1 gig of 3200 ram installed on a gigabyte
motherboard with agp 8X slot.

The X800 has a performance of 56, the 6600GT 54. (FPS)

So based on those prices, the 6600GT easily beats the X800 in
price/performance.

Howver, you can probably find an X800XL for around the $400 mark, that
has a performance of 76.

X800XL @ $400 gives 5.26 price/performance
6600GT @ $270 gives 5.00 price/performance

So the 6600GT is a slightly better buy in terms of price/performance.

The 9800 Pro @ $200 is probably more price/performance than the 6600GT.

I recently grabbed an X800XL and it's excellent.

The performance you achieve for these cards will depend heavily on the
CPU you have, so the numbers may not reflect what you would see in your
system.

The answer really depends on how important framerates at high resolutions
(greater than 1024x768 with video options enabled) are to you. I run a 9800
Pro 128Mb ($189 right now on sale at NCIX) with options enabled and it runs
all games just fine at good framerates but I dont run games at any more than
1024x768. If I run Doom3 or FarCry with FSAA and other options enabled at
1152x864 the 9800 Pro's limitations become readily apparent. The 6600GT
really pulls ahead at higher resolutions. An XP2800+ will limit the
performance of the really high end cards. Your next major upgrade will
likely be to a PCIe mainboard, so I would hesitate to plonk down $400+ for
an AGP X800XL to stick in an XP2800+ board. But hey, it's your call.

Same here, P4 2.8 (Northwood) on a 875P mobo,1GB DDR400 and a 9700Pro.
Still runs all the games great,and I don't see myself upgrading it in a
year or so.I'll probably buy a R520 (if any of these come out in AGP off
course) next year.

I agree. 9800 Pro propably offers the best performance per buck, it's
not a bad card at all. And at this point in time I see no reason to pay
premium for a high end AGP card that will most likely soon become
obsolete with pcie starting to take over. Maybe not obsolete performance
wise, but you won't be able to upgrade your mobo without needing to also
get a new graphics card if you stick with AGP at the moment.

I have a 9800 Pro which I got in July 2003, and a P4 2.8GHz CPU (Northwood
C) as well as 1GB of PC3200 RAM, both of which I picked up a couple of
months after that, and I'm still very happy with it all. I am putting money
aside here and there specifically for a new computer, but have it planned
out so that I won't be upgrading again until the April to June 2006 time
frame, depending on how I feel about my current system by then. I won't
pull the trigger on building a new computer until I'm not happy with my
current system, but given that AA and AF are not important to me, and I'm
willing to dial down resolution and details in games, I think I'll be
alright for a while. It'd be great to get three years (or almost three
years) out my machine especially from a gaming perspective. I can just
picture what CPU's and video cards will be like by then compared to what I
currently have now, even on the mid-range.

Forgot to point out that I run the 9800 Pro on a Barton 2500 @ 3200 spec
with 1 gig dual channel. Far Cry at 1152x864 without FSAA and AA is just
fine. At 1280x1024 there's a few areas where it slows down. Doom3 at
1152x864 without FSAA and AA is a slideshow in some areas. In my opinion the
9800 Pro is the best value right now....but I run a 19" LG F900B CRT, not a
17 or 19" LCD monitor with native 1280x1024 resolution.
