Default Jedi Academy problems

Hi folks. I know this has been discussed before, and I'm currently Googling
up past threads on the subject, but I thought I'd throw this up here anyway
if anyone would like to give me a quick summary (if any answers exist). The
two main problems are:

- screen flashing, sometimes to distracting levels
- load a game once and you're fine; try to load it a second time and you'll
lock up your computer

Both of these are almost certainly related to the ATI drivers. I'm using a
9800 Pro and the latest driver (forgot the version number and am at work
right now, but I downloaded and installed just a couple of days ago). I'll
keep Googling as I said, but are there any resolutions to these issues?
Thanks,

Mike

Just a follow-up with some information I found on ATI's website:

---------------------------------
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy hangs when enabling 4x or 6x Anti-Aliasing
The information in this article applies to the following configurations:
a.. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy from LucasArts
b.. RADEON and later Series Graphics cards
c.. CATALYST driver suite for Windows XP, 2000, ME, or 98/98SE
d.. OpenGL Anti-aliasing set to 4x or 6x in ATI Control Panel
The system may hang while playing Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, should the
Anti-aliasing level be set to either 4x or 6x mode in the ATI OpenGL Control
Panel tab.

ATI Engineering has been advised of this issue and is investigating.

Some users have reported that disabling the "Dynamic Glow" setting in the
game may help to work around the problem. To change this setting, perform
the following:
a.. Within the game, launch Single Player
b.. Go to Setup and change the Video Setting for Dynamic Glow to "OFF"
INFO-BASE# 4271

--------------------------------------------

Can anyone confirm if this information is accurate? I will of course try
fiddling with these settings once I get home...

Mike

Yeah, had the exact same problem. Really annoying screen flashing but no
crashes or lock ups. Either switch off the glow effect or go back to the Cat
3.6 drivers (these are the ones JK3 was finally tested with). Hopefully this
problem is solved in the long ovedue patch.

Ditto! Same problem here but no crashes. I am using ATI 9800 Pro AIW
with driver v3.8.

So, from my testing last night:

- the crashing is due to 4x anti-aliasing
- the flashing is due to dynamic glow

If you dial down to 2x anti-aliasing, loading a quicksave won't crash, and
if you turn off dynamic glow, the flashing goes away. Cool.

I only use 2X for FSAA. What exactly is dynamic glow? I didn't see the
differences with and without it in game. Maybe I didn't look hard
enough?

Dynamic glow makes the light saber throw light on walls and other
stuff. Volumetric shadows really kills performance for me, but that's
only available in Single Player.

Yeah, I tried to figure that out myself, but also couldn't see any
difference in the game whether it was on or off.

But it does that even if Dynamic Glow is off. That's what I thought it
would be too, but it doesn't seem to change if you turn DG off. The one
thing that does change is that the annoying flashing goes away if you turn
DG off.
