Going from a 9500 to a 9600 doesn't gain you much--the 9600 isn't a radical new architecture or anything. ATI made their big changes going to the 9500 and 9700, the 9600 and 9800 exist mostly for marketing reasons--they have some small changes that address nvidia's bragging rights in a particular area, and the 9600 is not moddable into a 9800 like some 9500 boards were to a 9700. > Thanx in advance / C. > > -- -- --John Reply to jclarke at ae tee tee global dot net (was jclarke at eye bee em dot net) |

Hi all...
I feel that it´s time for me to move on to a new card. I´ve been using a Hercules 9500Pro for some time now, and I must say that I have been very pleased with it. I was thinking of changing to a new 9600XT, but after having read most reviews of them I have some doubt if it is a good bargain. What do YOU think....? Thanx in advance / C. |

In some instances the 9600XT is still slower than a 9500 Pro. Hold on to that card until there's a real new product cycle, or wait until you can get a 9800 for a better price. -- "I thought I had an appetite for destruction, but all I wanted was a club sandwich." I think you should stay in 9500 pro either, otherwise look for a 9800 pro or
xt for the future. Save your money, the 9500pro is still a superior product.

The 9800 uses the R350, not the R300. The 9600 uses the R_V_350. But you are correct that the 9600 uses a different chip from the 9800. > the 9800XT being the > only exception. The only exception to _what_? The 9800XT and 9600XT use the R360 and RV360 respectively. > If I were to buy a 9600 I would buy the AIW version, > as it is faster than the regular 9600 Pro, but I'm not sure about the > 9600XT. The 9600XT apparently has the same sort of "automatic overclocking" that is presen in the 9800XT. If you need DVI then the 9600AIW is out, it has dual VGA only. It's not modable because it uses an entirely different chip...the R350, not
the R300 like the 9500, 9700 & 9800, the 9800XT being the only exception. If I were to buy a 9600 I would buy the AIW version, as it is faster than the regular 9600 Pro, but I'm not sure about the 9600XT.
