Default Halo problems

Has anyone had problems with running Halo? The game crashes on me every
time, after playing for a few minutes. I have my monitor refresh set at
85hz. I usually set the game at that too.. i don't know much about refresh
rates. I also disabled my sound card to test it again. I have a 9700 pro and
vsync is set to on.
When the game crashes, my monitor light turns from green to orange, looks
and sounds like it shuts off. I always have to restart my pc when it
happens. I applied the patch and it did nothing to help my problem.

I also notice some graphics issues. The flashlight affect isn't as nice as
on the xbox version. And, there is no specularity on my assault rifle like
there is on the xbox version. The pistol and other weapons look ok. I also
notice that a few textures are not quite as nice looking as on the xbox
version, like the textures used on the blue elites. Is that normal? Did they
cut some things back for the pc version?

My framerate is also completely horrible! The game isn't playable at
1024x768 or even 800x600. Shouldn't my 9700 pro be able to handle things
easily? The only thing i can think of is that my cpu is limiting my
framerate. It's a 1.2 athlon, with a 266 iWill ddr board.

If i had a 3.06 P with h/t and an 800mz board, and the same card, would i
get much better framerates?

Halo is a DX9 game. You have a DX8 rated graphics card.

Hi,

I have a 9700 pro (made by ATI) with the latest Omega drivers, my Vsync is
set to off, graphics are all at max and my resolution is @ 1152 X 864 and
every thing is working fine

You could try to update the drivers and may be reinstall the game

Good luck

Not sure if the card is DX9 or DX8 or what, but the game is capable of
running from DX7 - DX9. In fact, it has 4 seperate code paths that you can
set by enabling the following command line options on the .exe:

-use20
-use14
-use1
-useff

The first option above is DX9, the next two are DX8 (use14 is pixel shaders
1.4 while user 1is Pixel shader 1.0, both in DX8). Useff sets the game mode
to DX7.

First thing I would do is insure you've got the latest vid card drivers
installed. Even if you do, I'd uninstall the ones you've got (by
uninstalling the control panel if it's installed then uninstall the vid
drivers, rebooting after you uninstall each one) Also, you didn't specify
what operating system you are using but I would reinstall/install the latest
Directx if possible.

Finally, you might want to give the command line options a try. I'd start
at the last one on the list above. If it works, try the next one up and so
on till you find the option that doesn't work then use the last one that
did. To use the options, do the following:

Find the shortcut to the game in your Start menu.

1. Right-click on the shortcut and choose Properties.

2. In the target field, you will see "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Games\Halo\halo.exe" (assuming you've installed in the default directory).
Add -use14 at the end of it or whatever option you want to try.

Adding the options to the shortcut as described above might help.

I own a 9800 Pro and works great here. A friend of mine, who convinced me
to buy the game, has a 9700 Pro I think. It works great on his system as
well. Somethign on your end is just wrong. Try to figure it out. Hope
this helps. Cya!

Everyone's framerates suck. Your original problem I haven't heard of
anyone having before. The best place for you to check for answers on

How come it's DX9 if the XBox original would have been DX8 (GF3/4 graphics
card). I thought it was just a port of that so I doubt it would have been
made DX9.
