newbie q about ping

when i use ping more than often the request times out, however some hosts
are reachable but most others are not reachable.

any advise would be great

You want advise with respect to what?

Ping is a network diagnostic tool. If a ping times out, there is a network
problem or configuration that is blocking ICMP packets.
