hp Scanjet 2200c

Hi!
Since downloading Windows XP SP2 my HP Scanjet 2200c has developed problems.
First, the lamp does not switch off after I finished scanning - I had to
pull the plug, and what is much worse, all scanned pictures and text are
not sharp anymore. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software, Version
1.22, to no avail. I tried to mess with the settings, but this scanner was
quite marginal to start with in that regard. Printed material was never much
good.

I am now thinking of buying a new and better scanner, though for modest home
use only. Any suggestion? And how do I know that their Software will work
with SP2?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
