I have the scanner on my Epson RX510 set to scan negs/slides at 2400
dpi and 48 bit colour. While it is scanning it reports the file size as 40 M, but when it saves the files they are around 20 M and 24 bit. How can I get it to save the files as 48 bit? Thanks Mike |

Are you by any chance scanning from within a 24-bit application? Bart |

No. I have been using the supplied scanning software, and the save to
file option. You might check the download page at Epson's web site for an
updated version. I don't have the RX510 ... but Epson Scan for the 4870 is now up to something like version 2.3 ... |

If the software is like that supplied for the Epson 2450, it will only save to 48 bits if you are scanning from within a 48-bit application like Photoshop. In spite of what the box claims, it specifically won't save to 48-bit files on its own, using the 'save to file' option. |

When I scan film/slides with my Epson Photo 2400 using Smart Panel it
saves in 48 bit, giving 40 M files, so I assumed the later software for a later Epson 2400 dpi scanner would do the same. One difference when using the later software is that when I save I get a warning that not all applications can use the 48 bit files, as I have found with my PhotoShop Elements. I was wondering if by clicking ok on that message I am telling it to save it at 24 bit. As it doesn't specifially say it is changing the file to 24 bit I thought I was only acknowledging that I had read the message. You may be right. I'll have to check it out. It's been a while since I
visited that problem and maybe I didn't understand it well enough at the time. But I recall that with the 2450's Smart Panel it saved the same size file whether I used 48 or 24 bits in the TWAIN, and don't remember getting that warning/OK popup. I had been looking to save 48 bit scans (or 16 bit greyscale) for possible future use (when I might afford full Photoshop) of materials that had to be returned to their owners, and recall being blocked from that. Maybe the problem was that it was prints and not transparencies? Running an experiment 48 bit color photo, 300 dpi, 8.5x11.7 inches, Twain claims 51.21 MB close, save as TIFF --- size 26,223 KB color photo, ...the same... Twain says 25.60 MB close, save TIFF --- size 26,223 KB I can't remember all the details of where I found the info that said (or that I remember saying) you had to save 48-bit from within an application. I should check the epson site to see if there's an update. <mjmm@.bit.net.au> wrote > When I scan film/slides with my Epson Photo 2400 using Smart Panel it > saves in 48 bit, giving 40 M files, so I assumed the later software > for a later Epson 2400 dpi scanner would do the same. The Epson Scan program is 1.32E and the update on the Epson site is
1.32. I assumed that the 1.32E was later than the 1.32, maybe I was wrong. I experimented a bit with the settings and I can't get more the 24 bit files, though a few were 16 bit. I will try scanning with my 2400 Photo Perfection scanner using the newer software, if they work together.
