Default NIKON Coolscan III

After installing Scan 3.1.2, I cannot access some of the preference settings
and the three tabs on the lefthand side of the Pref button is missing. HELP!

What three tabs? The Prefs button is on the left side of the window -
there is nothing further left than that other than the window border.

As to setting the preferences - a couple of suggestions:

Have you downloaded and run the firmware update necessary to get the
LS-30/CS-III scanner to work with this software? It requires Firmware
1.3 or later. Version 1.3.1 is on the Nikon Technical Support web page.

Have you tried operating the scanner from the NikonScan software, rather
than using the Twain interface from another application? If you use the
software then Preferences can be accessed from the menu, under
Edit|Preferences or Ctrl-K.

BTW, is the latest NikonScan the greatest too? I may give it a try
again after your suggestions as I haven't used it for quite a while
now.

Not really. It addresses a few bugs in 3.12 that were not problems for
me but introduces some new ones that are.

*DON'T* try to install the latest version of Nikonscan - it is not
compatible with the LS-30/CS-III scanner. At best you will need to
uninstall it and go back to NS3.1.2 - at worst you could corrupt
something in the PC or the scanner and be left helpless.
