Need a small footprint scanner - (No more visioneer??)

I have used Visioneer's Strobe scanners, starting with their parallel
units, which worked great with Windows 95 and 98, but now that I am
using Win XP, I have been using the Strobe Pro, which works very
intermittently at best. When it works, it's great, but I continually
have to "Find the Scanner" as it loses it's connection all the time.
Feeling fed up with it, I bought a Visioneer XP 100, and was on the
phone with their tech support for 2 hours yesterday, having to
repeatedly delete folders from the registry, reinstall, delete,
reinstall, blah blah blah. Tech was very nice, but perplexed. The XP
100 won't scan when you insert a piece of paper, etc.

Does anyone know of an alternative scanner to this one? I am
increasingly leery of buying from Visioneer at all, and wonder if
there is something out there that might work seamlessly with
Paperport, as I have many years of documents stored in it.
