Default software invalid address heeelp

Recently I had to reinstall xp and without going into too much detail
for a while I had two installations on my drive
Now I have one

I can install my scanner but when I try and install the Canoscan
software I get the message I am

"attempting to access an invalid address"

This occurs with any drive and also when I download the software from
canon
and try and run it from my hard drive.

I'm assuming this means the computer knows that setup is there..it
appears ok , I can use readmes etc but setup itself can't find
something it needs (twain driver perhaps)
or is this some odd problem in finding setup itself

My specs don't seem very relevant in this case but I am running xp pro
with service pack 1 and latest security updates

I haven't been able to find this problem mentioned in the newsgroups
so any assistance is appreciated.

Don't get to locked in to the message you're getting. Windoze (or for that
matter a lot of M$ software) often gives an "off the wall" diagnostic that
has nothing to do with the actual problem. I had a similar experiences with
WinXP, which was finally resolved by installing a missing dll file.

When you say you "had two installations on my drive" I assume they were in
separate partitions, and should not have interfered with each other <grin>.
I recently upgraded from XP Home to Pro, and had two instances of XP in two
different partitons (the reason is valid but complicated). When I upgraded
the second partition, the installer got confused and trashed both versions.
It was fixed only by reformatting and starting from scratch with a clean
install in each partition.

If all else fails, you might try a clean install in a new partition as an
experiment, and see if Canoscan works there. If so, you may want to
reformat and do a clean install on the main partiton, even though it's a
pain.
