Hi,
I have just upgraded one of my PC's to Windows Server 2003 (origionaly 98). I had previously bought an Epson Perfection 660 for that Pc and it worked perfectly with win 98. But after upgrading to 2003 Server no Twain applications could detect the scanner. After struggeling for some time I switched on WIA (disabled by default), this allowed windows to detect it, but applications (such as Irfan View and my OCR applications) failed to detect it as a TWAIN device. The only application that can see it (and only by assigning it to the 'scan' event) is photoshop. Scanning in Photoshop is great but I also want to use my OCR applications which fail to detect any TWAIN devices. I have also tryed the scanner on XP and it again works perfectly. I also own a digital camera which i use on my XP machine, when I tryed to install this on 2003 Server i have the same problem. I hope someone here knows what i'm doing wronge (i don't). Thanks a lot. Nearly all the problems I've seen with newer versions of Windows are caused with an upgrade from 98/ME. You really need to do a complete, fresh install. -- Hecate Hecate@newsguy.com veni, vidi, reliqui |

I am running Windows ME and Server 2003 in dual-boot mode. ME is on C:, 2003 is on D. They don't share any info. Both are "fresh" installs. No upgrade was done. To the best of my knowledge, TWAIN does not use the WIA service. In fact, I have the WIA service disabled right now. My scanner is a Mustek 1200 CU. The closest driver match for this scanner under 2003 is the XP TWAIN driver. When I first tried to install this driver, it complained that the OS was not Windows XP and refused to install. I then edited the product name key in the windows registry using regedit. I changed it from windows server 2003 to windows xp. This allowed me to run the Mustek XP driver install program. The other thing is that the driver is not signed. XP / 2003 don't like to install unsigned drivers. Under Computer / Properties / Hardware / Driver Signing, I have it set to Ignore. I found that Warn was preventing drivers from getting installed even if I told it to go ahead and install the driver. With these changes, I finally got the driver installed. The scanner was found and shows up in Control Panel > Scanners and Cameras. I used IrfanView 3.90 and it can scan from the scanner just fine. It brings the scanner GUI up and lets me pick my settings and preview / scan. Then I installed TWAIN drivers for my Canon Elph S100. These drivers conflicted or over-wrote the Mustek drivers, such that I could now read images from the Camera, but I could no longer read images from the Scanner. The Scanner TWAIN driver now appeared to be broken. I re-installed the XP drivers for the Scanner and it worked again. For the camera, I have a SanDisk Compact Flash USB card reader, and pull images off the memory card that way. No TWAIN driver required. I've tried enabling WIA and using software which scans via WIA, but I've never gotten it to work. I've always ended up using the TWAIN driver. Hope this helps. |
