looking for a color laser

Its time to replace my old color laser printer. I could fix it but it
would cost more than its worth.
I was looking at HP color laser printers but I've been told that using
plain laser paper will damage the drum on a 4500-PS color. Is this
true?

While the cost of the paper does not bother me having the kids load the
wrong paper would.

One of my main requirments is to be able to connect the printer to a
network. I have an old print server that supports several parallel
devices so going through a parallel port would be an option or directly
connecting the printer to the network would also be an option (the
printer I'm tossing was a laserwriter that I got because it was free)

I don't want to go the route of using an inkjet because of the problems
with printer heads clogging etc etc.

Refurbished Tek-Xerox Phaser 740-760?

Doesn't seem to have any paper problems except for the real heavy
(80#) stuff! Several settings for coated, cards, plain, etc. to
accomodate the fixing temperature variations of the types.

We use just about any copy or laser paper in our 4500 and have no problems.
If you have'nt had a color laser before take a close look at the costs of
toner and maintenance. replaceing everything at once can feel like buying a
new printer.

I have several laser printers at home and all except one was found as a throw
away and fixed by me including the apple color laserwriter. I've also fixed
printers for friends. The laserwriter had only a minor problem when I got it.
However, now it needs both a fuser and some other parts so the economics of
fixing it are not there. The fuser runs almost as much as a new HP color laser
and other parts are only available as salvage.

What drives me to a color laser is the cost of ink for an inkjet and the
problems with clogging. Just the number of pages you can print from a laser
before worrying about toner makes it worth it to me.

The laserwriter was really nice for a couple years. I receive large documents
by email with pictures and charts that I need to printed out. It was really
nice being able to print them out in color and with the quality of the output I
felt no need to have a photo printer.
