Default Profiling

I have used VueScan to profile my Epson 2450 scanner and my Canon i9100
printer. In general, the VueScan profile seems to be better for the
scanner and worse for the printer. The latter may be because it uses
the scanner to generate the profile and, no matter how good your scanner
profile, it will never be exactly correct. Canon's profile seems to be
much more accurate, while Epson's is less accurate. Since I print from
Photoshop this is not a problem.

I have also used The ColorVision Spyder and PhotoCAL software to profile
my monitor and here is where it gets tricky. If I scan and print Wolf
Faust's IT8 target, the print is very close to the target, not exact,
but very close. The picture on the monitor also is close, but
considerably different from the print.

What the heck should I do about this, if anything? The fact is IT8
targets are way more sensitive than the average color print. Is it
worth worrying about or am I just being too anal? If it is worth
worrying about, should I try to develop an overlay layer in Photoshop to
bring the monitor into alignment or should I fiddle with the printer
output to try to bring it into alignment with the monitor. From a cost
standpoint, it would be cheaper to play with the monitor, but maybe cost
isn't the issue.

All comments will be appreciated.
