Epson 1270 paper slipping

I have a 2 year old Epson 1270.

It sometimes will take the paper in and start printing, but the paper
does not advance. The machine continues to print the whole picture
onto nothing (I presume the rollers).

When the next sheet eventually comes through it is covered in ink from
the previous one.

Does anyone know why the machine is not advancing the paper ?

Do you have the paper thickness lever in the correct position?

Thanks, I have cleaned the rollers and it works much better now.
The cloth was covered in black ink!
