IIRC, the Opteron 848 was listed for $3199, it's now $1514, that would

I prefer a cluster of 40 C3 @ 1GHz ;-)

The future of some kinds of computing may lie more in the direction of a cluster of C3's than in the direction of a cluster of Opterons. My suspicion is that interconnect costs and latencies make a cluster of C3's impractical from a performance point of view, but it would make an interesting topic of conversation. Even were a cluster of C3's impractical from a performance point of view, it might actually make more sense for some people (e.g. me) who are at the moment more interested in insight than in performance.
