Getting started transferring vhs 8mm to dvd

I have a 8mm camcorder and really old Beta tapes of my family that I
would like to transfer to DVD so that I can preserve family memories.
I have a DELL computer with a cd and dvd burner that I purchased
with Videowave4 and Dazzle. From what I have been reading dazzle
seems to be the really junk way to go. So I am asking what you might
suggest as the best way to go. I would need to edit at some time
(gotta lot of soccer game footage). My Beta tapes are really
important to me, and I have an old Beta VCR, hopefully it stills
work.
