Help.
Having this problem for a while when MSN 6.x prompted me to upgrade to 7.0 the error dialog is "MSN Messenger setup has failed with error code: '1601'. Please go to the MSN Messenger Web site and download the software from there." Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) Anyone knows how to resolve this error? TIA. Kevin |

Greetings Kevin,
This indicates that the Windows Installer is damaged. To correct this, click Start, then Run, and type the following: %systemroot%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver then click OK. Then try again. ____________________________________________ Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Messenger/MSN Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com All posts unless otherwise specified are (c) 2005 Jonathan Kay. Jonathan,
Sorry for bothering you again, but I did not see a discussion group for Windows Installer. My Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) seems to be damaged. Here are the symptoms: 1) When installing updates/patches via Windows Update, the updates installations downloaded & completed and prompted reboot... but in reality evere updates installation failed. Because the Windows Updates keep indicating that I should install these critical updates... 2) installing Java Runtime Envirronment from www.java.com failed with error: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. ..." 3) Messenger 7 setup has failed with error code: '1601'. Your suggested "%systemroot%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver" works for MSN but not Windows Updates or JRE. TIA for your great advices. Kevin.
