Outlook will not open

Outlook will not open and I get the error message:

"Unable to open your default e-mail file. The folder
C:\ ------\outlook.pst is not a personal folders file"

What happened? the file is there, last modified last
night, and it is not empty. When I click on OK the program
closes.
