Default Microsoft Exchange Server is Unavailable

I am trying to connect from my home to the exchange
server at my office through a VPN solution. I am able to
ping the server and get to the network drives but can't
get Outlook to connect. Everything seems to be connected
correctly but it won't connect. I was also to check name
to the server and the mailbox and it that works and asked
for a password. This is on Windows XP and when I was
using Windows 98, it asked for a domain name in the
properties for "Client for Microsoft Networks" but I
can't seem to find where that is located in XP? I am
connected to a NT domain. Any help would be appreiciated.

I am not able to assist you as I know very little about
computers but I think that you can help me. I now use
Windows XP and am trying to use an old version of OUTLOOK
(97)as this is the program we are now using at work and I
am to learn it. I cannot get it to connect as I do not
know what they mean by exchange server and name. Can you
help me? Thanks.

Your exchange server should have a name or an IP address
can also be used. That is the IP address of your server.
Right click on your Outlook Icon and then click on the
exchange server. Enter the IP address and then your
mailbox name. Should work if you can connect to the
server.

Thanks for the help but I still can't seem to get it to
work. It is Outlook 97 and there is no place under the
TOOLS to set up an account so I only assumed I needed the
Microsoft Exchange Server (no idea what that is). I use
Windows XP and my email is through a cable with shawmail.
So I now that my provider is shawmail - how would I know
my mailbox name and am I even suppose to be setting up an
exchange server? I am puzzled!

The case you are describing would not have an exchange
server, that is only for a network setup. You need to
start over and don't select exchange server.
