When I did this and choose restore default settings, I did
not expect all the emails to be gone. Is there any way to
retrieve them.

Search for pst-files.

Make sure you include hidden and system files and folders when searching for
pst-file.

By default it is located in
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
