Default Weird Clip Problem-Disappearance/Reappearance

I have a fairly lengthy video (about 23 minutes) that is due for school in a
few days. The clips (on collection, timeline, and storyboard) are either
crossed out or are blacked out (which I assume were deleted by some mistake).
The weird thing is, when I reopen the project, new clips return, and in
generally the right order (except with missing clips in between).

Does moviemaker make any backup? Is there any way to get my stuff back?

Well the ones crossed out with a red X may just have been moved not
necessarily deleted.
Try right clicking on one of them and then clicking "Browse for missing
file" from the resulting menu.
If WMM finds the file it will sometimes update the locations for all the
files that seem to be missing.
