Updating Outlook Express

I recently updated Windows Explorer and Outlook Express on
my system running Windows 98. I did this as part of the
process of installing the DSL software from SBC. When I
was done, all my saved e-mails in Outlook Express were
gone--deleted--cleaned out.
Has anyone ever heard of this? When I contacted SBC about
it, they said they never heard of this problem.
