OOM vs CDO

Last week I posted a question about how long it took to iterate through
400 Calendar items. Michael suggested I use CDO instead.

I know nothing about CDO. What is the basic difference and why would
it be faster?

Can anyone point me to articles/links that give a good overview of CDO
and code examples of how to work with items in a Calendar folder.
