I see the same as you.

I think it is because Mar appears in a Custom List (for months).
I tried including Wed in the source data and it too was sorted to the
top, as was S35 which I happen to have in a Custom List of my own.

I guess it's a nice feature that if you have a custom list (e.g. of
regions) they are automatically sorted according to your list when you
make a pivot table.

So I guess Microsoft will tell us it is "by design" that items on
custom lists come first when the field is not explicitly sorted.

The solution is to select the field in the pivot table and use Data /
Sort / by Labels

Thanks Bill, At least now I know of a work around, and I suppose I will
explore the impact of custom lists upon sorting further.
