selection too large errors when I hide rows in excel

I am working with a large Excel file and need to hide some rows. When I do
and get about 866 ros down and save the file it gives me a Selection too
large error.
What causes this to happen?
Also when I close the file and reopen it the hidden files are back instead
of hidden.
