Thanks for that Article. I didn't know about it. Altho' it is for XL
5.0 and 7.0 I've found it works to a degree with with XL 2K (SR-1).

Changing the Y axis labels works as described but I can't get it to
work with the X axis labels using XL 2K. Even if it did work I can't
see how I can use it to get the 3 layer X axis labels I need.

Anyway... thanks for the info. Interesting quirk. Maybe one day I'll
find some use for the Y axis selective labelling facility ;-)
