french characters import as japanese !!! Help please !!

I have recently upgraded to Excel XP in WinXPpro. Whenever I import a txt
data
file into excel, where the data file has a french name in it (for example
Bérénice) the french characters with accents translate into japanese
characters. How can I stop this, please ?
