Default update problems, XP

Since I bought my computer about two years ago, with
Windows XP as the OS, it has been configured for
automatic updates. Every so often I get a message that
downloaded updates are ready to install. I click on this,
and they install. Lately, when I get the message, within
five minutes I get a message that loading the update was
unsuccessfull. Yesterday, I tried downloading service
pack 2, and the same thing happened. I get a message that
the service pack was not installed. No explanation. I am
clueless. Any ideas?

Thanks.

You could go to Staples and get the free CD of the SP2 update.
