Why does my MSN messenger have no audio?

i have tried unistalling and reinstalling everyhing back but no luck fixing
the audio for msn 7... i upgraded a couple of days ago, my last messenger was
working just fine, i could here the new mail sound or when someone got
connnected or msg me and etc, i dont why this is happening when i havent
change any settings or anything.

could some help me here, maybe this is fixable by a patch or something!

ps:also when new mail comes i dont get the notice box thing, and i have not
change any default settings, i checked them like twice and everything is in
order (enabled sounds and notices)

Have you installed ZoneAlarm Firewall (free version)?

yes i did have it installed for a couples of days, i liked the multi features
but the reason why i got rid off of it was because it slowed my internet
connection speeds.

could you please tell me what i should do since you might have an idea of my
computer situation.

Well, I had the same problem and when I looked into 'Alerts and Sounds'
category in Options, I saw only two events listed under MSN Messenger. So I
did a little registry hack which solved the no sound problem. I will describe
the operation but, if you are willing to follow, keep in mind that the
registry is sensitive so take a restore point first and then go ahead with
those instructions:

1. Open the registry by typing 'regedit.exe' into the Run command.
2. Navigate to the key with the name HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Open it by clicking
it's plus sign to the left.
3.Open the subkey with the name AppEvents (should be the very first) by
clicking the plus sign to its left. You will notice other subkeys under that
one with the first having the name Event Labels.
4. Openthe 'EventLabels' subkey by clicking the plus sign to its left. What
you get under that is a list of all the events that can be associated with
the a sound. I mean all, both windows events and Microsoft's apps that reside
in your pc. Among those the ones that you need is those associated
exclusively with MSN Messenger.
5. Those events are easily pinpointed by their key's name. It starts with
MSNMSGR_. Be accurate! Not the MSMsgs_ keys (those are related with windows
messenger but the MSNMSGR_ keys). Those are all the events that are
associated with MSN messenger by default. Write down their names. You don't
need to open them and get confused by their data. Just write their names down
in a piece of paper.
6. Click the minus sign to the left of the EventLabels parent key above.
Underneath that key is another key with the name 'Schemes'. Open it by
clicking the plus sign to its left. With the same manner open the subkey
called 'Apps' beneath. Do you notice a subkey with the name MSNMSGR? Again
not the MSMSGS key (this is for windows messenger) but the MSNMSGR key. Open
it! Underneath you might have some others. (In my case there were only two).
7. Right click the afferomentioned MSNMSGR key (not one of the subkeys under
it) and select new -> key. A new subkey will be created. Give that key a name
of those you took down in step 5 above. Repeat this process - creating and
naming subkeys - for each name you have taken down.
8. Close the registry and go back to the MSN Messenger. Go to Options,
Alerts and Sounds. Click Sounds.. and navigate to MSN Messenger. You should
be able by now to associate each listed event with the propper sound. The MSN
sounds files are under Program Files/MSN Messenger.

I read Mr Monge's MSN Messenger problem with interest as I have the same
one, although I did not install that firewall you mentioned. I followed
your instructions as below and created new keys for the Messenger
sounds. When I go back into Messenger options and go to Sounds and
Alerts the ones I created are there but even though I allocate sounds
to them they still don't play any. Could you help please?

I am having the EXACT same problem.......it just happened within th
last three days i have not altered or downloaded anything... i do hav
the virus program but have not touched it..... the sounds went firs
then the e-mail notifications went today .. i have done as u suggeste
and nothing ..still soundless
When i go to the options window and then into the sounds and alert ta
then into sounds..... i scroll down i have the messenger listed, i hav
8 speackers that play the right sounds however only the nudge and Ne
Mobile Message are labelled.
I have tired re-installing ihave tried deletig the sounds and puttin
them back.....nothing

i have sounds in everything else yahoo, AIM,ICQ i can play games/ musi
and even window applications have sounds....just nothing on MS
messenger.

This has got me completely stumped !!!!!!!!
Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi John,
as clear and concise as your instructions were my result was a negative
one. My msn is still not working and I followed your instructions to the
T. Can you please help, what am i doing wrong.

i have sent emails to microsoft helped desk and they have tried to tell other
things to get the sounds and alerts to wotk, unfortunatley it still doesnt
work, but when my daughter uses the messenger, she gets sounds.. go figure

fred, windows xp has has its own firewall, so does my router. how many more
firewalls needed?
