Default Returning from Standby Internet connection lost

After installing the last set of 5 patches from
Microsoft, my XP Home Edition laptop sometimes has the
following problems after returning from standby (lid-
close action):

1) SysTray balloon says "a network cable is unplugged"
(false)
2) When Internet Explorer is fired up, it cannot find
homepage
3) When e-mail program is fired up, it cannot connect.

This is a mild annoyance, since prior to installing the 5
patch set from Microsoft*, I could browse or check e-mail
within seconds after opening laptop's lid and entering
password.

If I wait a few minutes before firing up IE or e-mail
program, they work properly.

*Other recently installed: Startpage Guard, SONY BIOS
update that was suppose to address issues of system
stability after returning from standby. Unfortunately,
I'm unsure of the chronology of events.
