Default Keyboard & mouse subkeys for safe mode

Knowledge base article 258795 states how to restore the
keyboard and mouse subkeys for safe mode, but assumes one
has access to a properly working W2K machine in order to
export and copy the registry files. Where can I get
copies of these registry files since I don't have access
to a properly working W2K machine?

As I read the article the intent is to boot "normally" (i.e. Not in
a Safe Mode) since this "fix" only applies to problems in one of
the Safe Modes. If you cannot boot normally and have Mouse/Keyboard,
I don't think that 258795 will help.

FWIW here (W2KmSP4 PS2 Mouse and Keyboard and default MS OS drivers)
those keys have nothing but

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
@="Mouse"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
@="Keyboard"

If appropriate you could always do a "parallel install".

Yes, the article is only in reference to safe mode. I can
boot normally with no problems with the keyboard or
mouse. I only have a problem when trying to boot into
safe mode, which is needed occasionally to delete infected
files. Booting to safe mode results in no keyboard or
mouse functionality. The registry subkeys have "Keyboard"
and "Mouse" as the data fields respectively. Any ideas?

What mouse/keyb do you have and what drivers? The original intent (I
think) was to support direct PS/2 connected peripherals. If USB, I
don't know but you might double check BIOS settings for USB support
perhaps.

The keyboard and mouse are both PS/2 hardware, and there
are no drivers installed (they are not required with
W2K). I'm not using any USB connections.

Thanks for your continuing help.

Okay. I don't know. :-)
But I will see what I can up with here by rebooting with bootlogging
enabled into Safe Mode. Just to clarify, you mean ordinary Safe Mode
right? Not Command Prompt Only or Recovery Console. Try to get back
here Tuesday.

Yes, ordinary safe mode is the problem.
Can you highlight and export the subkey registry files as
suggested in KB article 258795 from a W2K machine? If so,
could you e-mail them to me and I can try that for a fix?

Thanks again for your help.

Sure Fred but see http://www.jsiinc.com/
Tip number 2423
where you could copy/paste it.
Basically the same as I posted up-thread, but includes also
"Safe Boot with Networking".
A great site BTW.

I am at a loss. My Safe Mode dutifully loads up basic mouse and
keyboard support. From ntbtlog.txt (about half way through):
...
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\i8042prt.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\mouclass.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\kbdclass.sys
...

And I would have expected you to get something like an Event Log
entry from Service Control Manager reporting a load failure or
some other event indicating an error.

Perhaps those key valuenames are bad but not visibly detected as such.
"(Default)" entries can be confusing sometimes. I would in fact try
merging the standard values were I in this situation. Please say if this
fixes the problem. And I think it is perhaps possible a
"BIOS Plug and Play OS = Yes" setting could be a problems (that is a
guess). Good luck.

Thanks for the help Mark, but I'm going to give up on this
for now. Maybe I'll try some more after the holidays.

I created the reg file from the jsiinc.com site and added
it to the registry. Still no luck with the safe mode
boot. I also checked that the BIOS Plug & Play is set to
yes. I've tried both yes and no to no avail. I've run
out of ideas to try.

Understood Fred. Post fresh when you've the time including newer
details and get some other eyes on this one.

Happy Holidays.
