hi, I recieved an error installing Adobe acrobat 6.0 into
my windows 2000 profesional machine. I have 256 memory and a empty 30 gb hard drive. I kept getting an error message during installation saying "Error 1606. Could Not Access Network Location <Common Administrative Tools>.All Users\" Error Message When You Install a Program". I searched Adobes help site and called Adobe. They said to refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 315352 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;315352) Here is the real problem. The article describes changing the registry key called "Common Administrative Tools" in the path 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell Folders' and editing the string in it to "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools" The problem is that path that I have in my registry doesn't have the key "Common Administrative Tools". I also tried to check other Windows 2000 machines and Windows XP machines if they have the same registry settings and they didn't. So either Microsoft may have given us the wrong Path or maybe Something else is wrong. I did find the "common administrative tools " key in a different folder called Shell Folders. I tried to edit this key by adding in those lines to the sting but after i reboot the system to save the changes, it reverts back to its original setting which is "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools" Overall I cant go by that article. You can try to see if the path in your registry has key in it or it is exactly as microsoft describes. I would love to get rid of this 1606 error and be able to install the program without problems. Does anyone have any clue to what i should do? thanks Gab |

It does seem there's a problem with the KB article. I don't find it on my
Windows XP Pro machine either. The way it is supposed to work is the Reg_Sz strings in \Shell Folders will always resolve to the Reg_Expand_Sz strings in \User Shell Folders, hence the reason you can't edit \Shell Folders I'll submit the article for review. If I do hear something on it I'll post back or send you an e-mail. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup. To tell you the truth. The real message is "Error 1606.
Could Not Access Network Location 8\startup. Maybe if i could figure out what key "8\startup " refers to, i can either edit or delete it to solve the problem. any clues?? >-----Original Message----- >Gab wrote in news:0c2601c347bb$30dc3460$a301280a@phx.gbl: > >> hi, I recieved an error installing Adobe acrobat 6.0 into >> my windows 2000 profesional machine. Sorry. Not a clue here. Weird. I suppose you have searched the registry for "8\startup". I suggest you get REGMON.EXE from www.sysinternals.com (free) and attempt to locate the registry key/value that is being accessed. That might yield some clues perhaps. > > >>-----Original Message----- >>Gab wrote in news:0c2601c347bb$30dc3460$a301280a@phx.gbl: >> >>> hi, I recieved an error installing Adobe acrobat 6.0 > into >>> my windows 2000 profesional machine.
