unknown devices

Under the "device manager", my Canon scanner falls
under "unknown devices". I've reloaded and uninstalled the
Canon scanner software a number of times. I call Canon
tech support, they can't help. Under "safe mode" the
scanner does not show up, but when I start windows it show
up as an unknown device under the USB devices. Please
help.
