i ran the beta version, it found a ton of bugs including
trojan downloader, but it also removed necessary componenents in my virus protection and for some reason would not let me connect to my wireless connection. The error message on reboot was that some compent was missing and re-installation was required. I just uninstalled the spyware program and did system restore which at least got me back online but it left the malicious programs too, did anyone else have a similar experience? |

Same problem! How do you do a system restore without
losing important documents? The problem started after my scan. I removed one threat, "webhancer" located at c:\windows\system32 \sporder.dll. This threat level was judged to be severe. System restore does not affect documents. Only system files and settings.

For anyone not able to get back online because spyware or
other malicious code because of modified registry I recommend the following program WinSockXP. WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try. It can create a registry backup of your current settings, so it is fairly safe to use. We actually tested it on a test machine that was having a Winsock problem due to some Adware removal, and after running the utility and rebooting, the connectivity was restored Available for download at: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html >-----Original Message----- >i ran the beta version, it found a ton of bugs including >trojan downloader, but it also removed necessary >componenents in my virus protection and for some reason >would not let me connect to my wireless connection. System Restore has no interest in most user data files such as those with
a doc, txt, wri, xls, ppt, jpg, avi, mp3 extensions (and many many more) nor does it monitor the contents of the My Documents object. Therefore using system restore should leave such files intact. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP mike.maltby@gmail.com Reggie <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > Same problem! System restore will not lose user data--just executables.

I always hate using 3rd party fixes for OS problems
caused by other 2rd party apps. Is there a specific Microsoft fix program for this issue (not considering a re-install of the OS)? >-----Original Message----- >For anyone not able to get back online because spyware or >other malicious code because of modified registry I >recommend the following program WinSockXP. > >WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet >connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed >registry entries. Unfortunately there's not such a utility. I don't think
Microsoft thought that software would compromise winsock. Use the 3rd party fix - it's a very useful fix in these situations where removing a spyware has the affect of taking down network connectivity. I keep a copy of winsockxpfix.exe on my thumb drive as an emergency =) Cheers, Dat >-----Original Message----- >I always hate using 3rd party fixes for OS problems >caused by other 2rd party apps. The Microsoft fix, if you are running XP, would be System Restore to a
Restore Point before the changes were made to the system. It is also possible--haven't seen this tested yet--that reinstalling the third-party software which placed sporder.dll on your system will fix this issue. So far, we know that Proventia Desktop, Cisco VPN client 4.0. and some McAfee security products use this dll which is falsely detected and flagged for removal.
