Default Accessing Local Shares

I am trying to access a local share via UNC from the same machine eg:
\\THISMACHINENAME\sharename\restofpath (which works on all other machines
but XP keeps saying the resource 'is not available' and that I 'might not
have the necessary permissions'.

Am browsing via IE. Sharing permissions are set to allow Network users. I am
logged in as Administrator but cannot even view Shared Folders directory!

*Question - will shares work if no IP number currently allocated (set via
DHCP) or Netbeui? I would have thought that the local machine would
recognise itself as such?

Will appreciate any suggestions as I have been at this
problem now for over a week!

Many thanks,

Alex Kudrasev

You can't enable file sharing without NetBEUI or TCP/IP.

Thanks Fritz,

Looks like you're right - the thing that threw me was that just having
TCP/IP isn't enough - you need an *active* network happening.

ie - if you pull out the cable, or disconnect from the internet - all file
sharing goes down, including anything local.

Cheers,

Alex.
