Not sure (although policies might be able to do this for you). I don't
understand why you'd bother tho - why not just avoid clicking it? Chris wrote: > It's driving me crazy - how can I get rid of the Manage menu item on > right clicking My Computer - I want to keep the other options > available. > > many thanks for any help > > Chris |

I need to do this as I'm setting up computers for students to use and I want
to prevent any access to this feature. I don't want to stop right clicking, period, on the desk top though. As you say there must be a policy to do this or a simple regedit to remove the context menu item. It's trying to find what it is which is my problem. Any further help would be appreciated. Ah - okay, so it's for users, not for you. Are you on a domain? You can use
the default domain policy to manage pretty much everything they can/can't do. Alternatively if you are using 2000/XP you can go into the mmc and make it
so right click on my computer is disabled. Plus you can really lock the PC down so the students can get into dos or control panel etc "Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]" <lanwench@heybuddy.donotsendme.unsolicitedmail.atyahoo.com> wrote in message news:e6iYlwaPEHA.2976@TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl... > Ah - okay, so it's for users, not for you. A limited account can still right-click on Computer, and open up Manage.
On the other hand, it is good to know that, when I attempted to use all the features, every attempt failed, with the message Access Denied. I guess I'll just have to stop all right clicks on My Computer if I can't
find the right regedit to do it - I know there *must* be one which will easily do it though Thanks for all the advice Chris "Kevin Haklar" <kjh@f2s.com> wrote in message news:uM7UXGbPEHA.1312@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl... > Alternatively if you are using 2000/XP you can go into the mmc and make it > so right click on my computer is disabled. If you are using XP pro/2000 type mmc in run (You will need to be admin) .
That should bring up the console. Click console->add/remove snapin click add and find group policy add that. Now navigate to user configuration->windows components->windows explorer. You should see an option like Hide the manage item on the windows explorer context menu. enable that and you should find manage is gone from right click on My computer. Have a look in these policies. you should see some really good ones to help lock down your machines. Hope that helps "Chris" <chris@upton-sims.freeserve.co.uk> wrote in message news:OyQFx$pPEHA.1276@TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl... > I guess I'll just have to stop all right clicks on My Computer if I can't > find the right regedit to do it - I know there *must* be one which will > easily do it though > > Thanks for all the advice > > Chris > > "Kevin Haklar" <kjh@f2s.com> wrote in message > news:uM7UXGbPEHA.1312@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl... > > Alternatively if you are using 2000/XP you can go into the mmc and make it > > so right click on my computer is disabled.
