This thread was much more helpful than the articles at MS (Thanks Mark
and Jack (especially your post on Apr 17 2003, 6:42 pm!)): http://support.microsoft.com/?id=228141 and http://support.microsoft.com/?id=243555 I have a w2k server with slipstreamed sp4 and (not slipstreamed) most hotfixes that I use as a test server. I had just set it up, and always change (all four of) the environmental temp/tmp variables to c:\temp. (default permissions on this folder are everyone full control, and there is 5GB free space on the drive). Later, I was trying to use the mmc as admin in the terminal services session, I got the error messages "Temporary Directory is not found or there is not enough disk space" and then "Failed to create empty document". I did not get these messages at the console. I did two things before it started working correctly again. I was not logged into terminal services when I did these. The first thing I did I do not think is related to the problem, but I list it anyway, since I did not check to see inbetween steps. 1. (unlikely the solution) I deleted a file called unknown.htm in the c:\documents and settings\administrator\local setting\temp folder. When I opened this file in the browser, it was a large gree question mark*. 2. (likely the solution) I reset the permission (which were admin=full control, admins=full control, system=full control) from c:\documents and settings\administrator\ with the option to "reset permissions on all child objects and enable propogation of inheritable permissions" set. *In case you are wondering, this machine is a test server on my private network, so unauthorized external access was not the cause of the mysterious unkown.htm file in the old temp folder. ;-) Hopefully this information will help someone else, too. Which is why I am presenting it here. Thanks!
