Trying to upgrade the system from Win98 to Win 2000 and in
the middle of the install it just locks - no error message no anything. Have reformated the drive, reinstalled win 98 and try the upgrade to only lock up again. Anyone have any clues as to why this is happening? How can I get around it? Thanks in advance! Cheers! |

No need to install Win98. To do a clean install, either boot the Windows
2000 CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts. When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your new install. During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will proceed. Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup. I am still locking up in the same place when installing
Win 2000 directly. If I format and reinstall Win 98 I have no trouble whereas Win 2000 it locks with no error message. Could the Win 2000 disk be bad or?????? Thanks so much for any assistance you may be able to provide! >-----Original Message----- >No need to install Win98. To do a clean install, either boot the Windows >2000 CD-Rom or setup disks. Most likely some hardware is non-compliant or at least the driver isn't
included on the install CD-Rom. Try removing all non-essential hardware. Get through the install, then ADD the hardware back in one-at-a-time using the latest Windows 2000 driver from the manufacturer's web site. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup.
