I am running a Duron 800MHZ CPU with a VIA chipset in my ATX motherboard and
320 MB of RAM. I want to upgrade my Windows 98 S/E to Windows 2000 whilst preserving the settings in all my applications. That means upgrading "over the top", and W2000 says that it is up to it. However, I keep my System ("C") on a separate partition which is 800MB in size as this makes backing up the system "C" partition very quick. 2000 says that it will allow me a choice of operating systems and dual boot. Then it tells me that there is not sufficient room on "C" for both of them so a simple direct upgrade is not possible. It tells me to install 2000 on "D" as a clean install. This will entail reinstalling all my applications. How do I get Windows 2000 to upgrade my Windows 98 S/E system without the choice of dual boot, please? At the end of the process I want a PC which has Windows 2000 only in "C". Thank you for your kind attention, J. |

You'll need to first expand the partition large enough to accommodate the
upgrade. While the upgrade may only require ~650 mB free space, I would suggest at least 5 gB. IMO it's simply not worth the trouble, given that you'll more than likely end up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind from the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install. To do a clean install, either boot the CD-Rom or boot the Windows 2000 setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts. When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your new install. During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will proceed. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup.
