The following are two postings I made in the MS support newsgroups.
__________________________________________________________ One of our remote users got the same exact problem after installing SP4 on a Dell Latitude c640. She installed it through Windows Update. I have another c640 here at the office that I just set up a few days ago. It didn't get the blue screen after installing SP4 through Windows Update. The only difference I can think of is that the one here is at the latest BIOS revision. Boot into safe mode and uninstall SP4. Then, try updating your BIOS (Obtain thru the Dell support site) to the latest version and reinstall SP4 through the Windows Update. ___________________________________________________________ I received the laptop in question. The blue screen it's getting is: Stop: 0x0000001E (0xC00000005, didn't write down the other 3 parameters.) KMode_Exception_Not_Handled ntoskrnl.exe The blue screen happens right when it's supposed to get to the GINA (press control-alt-del screen). I booted into safe mode with networking support and uninstalled SP4. It boots into SP3 no problem. I then updated the BIOS to A09 (The latest) and updated to the latest video card drivers, sound drivers, chipset drivers, and modem drivers. Install SP4 using the huge, network install file and reboot. Same blue screen. I tried disabling all third party services. Same problem. I checked the startup type for all services. Nothing is altered. Tried a chkdsk, which found and fixed errors. Same problem. I ended up shipping it back with SP3 and when the rep comes out two weeks from now, I'll have more time to work on it. I'm going to try an in-place upgrade followed by SP4. -Lucas "Tony Kirk" <tony92875@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:<039d01c33d01$87ee0310$a501280a@phx.gbl>... > Last night I updated to SP4 on my Windows 2000 Pro system. > Apon rebooting, just before making it to the logon box, my > system rebooted itself again.
