If you really want to play dirty, just create the folder $OEM$\$$\inf.
Get your driver good and flat (i.e. all in the same directory) and off you go. No other mods needed. Just make sure that if MS provides a driver in the original install (which they do for the Intel Gig NIC), then you need to have digitally signed drivers so that SFC won't boot them and replace with the originals. Best practice? Far from.
