Dual Boot upgrade Issues
Hello, I have been working on a NEC Versa SXi laptop w/ Win 98 OEM installation. I compromised on an upgrade somtime ago by creating a dual boot system w/ Win 2000 Professional, no reformating of disk or creation of new volumes. This to get around some compatibility problems w/ 2000 Professional. Now, my Win 98 has failed or is corrupted, I would like to upgrade the whole system to a single Win 2000 Professional O/S, but when I insert the 2K disk to attempt an upgrade only the 2K O/S is seen and the options are for repair or installation only. Could someone suggest how I might tackle this, so that the whole system runs under a single 2000 Professional operating system. Thanks -- Joe -- |

Hi Joe,
Assuming both Windows 98 and Windows 2000 are installed on the same partition (sounds like that's what you're saying): 1. Back up the 2000 system, and ALL critical data (just in case). 2. Boot into the Windows 2000 installation, and delete the Windows 98 installation (probably C:\WINDOWS). 3. Remove the Windows 98 entry from the boot.ini file in the root of your system partition (boot.ini is a "hidden" and "system" file, so you'll need both of these options set set to show within Windows Explorer). You don't need to upgrade the 2000 installation, it's already in place. Alternately, you could blow away the entire system and perform a fresh installation of Windows 2000. -- David Bullock, MCSE, MCSA, A+ Windows NT/2000/2003 Setup Support This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties and confers no rights. Thanks David,
Sounds like the solution to my problems, I'll give it a try - one question however, what happens to the data in the Old [Win 98] Registry? does this mean re-installing all the Win 98 installed programs. Or is there a way to copy the win 98 Registry data to the Win 2000 Pro. Thanks! -- Joe -- "David Bullock [MSFT]" wrote: > Hi Joe, > Assuming both Windows 98 and Windows 2000 are installed on the same > partition (sounds like that's what you're saying): > > 1. Hi Joe,
You'd have to install all of the programs in Windows 2000, for them to function in Windows 2000. That's assuming all of the applications are compatible with Win2K. Copying Reg keys from Win98 to 2K is not a good idea. -- David Bullock, MCSE, MCSA, A+ Windows NT/2000/2003 Setup Support This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties and confers no rights.
