Default SP4 Installation errors - can't find files

I installed SP4 on my wife's computer using the full install (135mb file)
without a problem.

I then used the same file (I had copied my copy to her machine) to install
it on my desktop. About half way thru I started getting info messages that
it couldn't find certain files. The default location was the drive on which
it installed the temporary files so there was nothing to change about
location. I skipped 3 of them and then got cold feet and backed out. The 3
were iss.dl_; msmgoc.dl_and ntoc.dl_.

Nothing was running - no av, no firewall - when all of this failed.

One added item on this - all of these files are in fact located in the
default temporary folder. Why SP4 can't load them is beyond me. Tried a
second time with similar results.

Had a similar prob, SP4 couldn't 'find' ntdetect.com, arcldr.exe and
arcsetup.exe. The files were located in the directory that sp4 created but
setup refused to copy them. I tried to copy them out to another dir to
manually install them later, but I got a sharing violation which is probably
why setup couldn't use them in the first place.

My fix was to make them read-only so they wouldn't be purged when setup
finished, reboot, then plonk them into place manually. The spooky thing is
that the two arc*.exe files were already in place even though the installer
said it couldn't move them.

You could do the above, copy the troublesome files to a new location,
restore your system partition (you did Ghost it before you started didn't
you?). Then run sp4 again and point it at the new location for the files
when it trips up.

Hope this is of some use,

Cheers,
Codehead

Unfortunately one of the files it can not find doesn't even give me the
option to select another location.

Re: ghost - definitely. After last attempt couldn't get anything but the
BSOD. Restored image immediately to get back to operating.
