Hi,
I was working on my pc and all of a sudden I got this error message on a dark blue screen: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\default or its log or alternate is corrupt, absent, or not writable. Biginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or techincal support group. I have valuable data on my hard drive and cannot loose this data. I have tried starting windows on every possible way eg, safe mode and restore mode but im getting the same screen all the time. I put registry restore floppy in the disk drive but it is not reading it so I cant even load the repair file off the floppy unless im doing somthing wrong. Please help. Thanks |

You can restore the default hive using the most recent backup found in
%windir%\repair\regback If no backups use the original-as-installed default hive from %windir%\repair\default to %windir%\system32\config\default To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000 Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD, use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks. Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows 2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: %systemroot% and %windir% -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup. Greetings. I too am suffering this c0000218 stop error as it relates to th corrupt hive file SOFTWARE. I have tried all the MS fixes and even suggestions from various forum all to no avail. I am currently left with few possibilities. RAM or HD {new} may be bad. You see, I had a successful install of Win2k SP4 and Sunday morning i failed with a different error. A corrupt winnt\system32\config\syste file. The MS articles resolved that, but now its te \winnt\system32\config\SOFTWARE file. I ended up reformatting that drive and tried an install (NTFS) and i started to install and failed with the c000218 error. Am ready t pitch the box out despite hundreds of dollars invested. Help if you can, please - PFSmit ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted via http://www.mcse.m ----------------------------------------------------------------------- View this thread: http://www.mcse.ms/message429112.htm |
