Default Monitoring print jobs on lpd server

When a Windows 2000 client prints to a printer that resides on a Unix print
server via the lpd protocol, the job shows up in the Windows 2000 printer
window, then goes away. There is a command line utility 'lpq' that will
actually show what is in the que, but the gui that our users rely on shows
the que as empty.

Is there a way to get the gui to recognize what is in the que on the lpd
server? I've tried changing the 'port type' on the clients without success.
